Summer
Safety
•
Please don’t leave pets in parked cars – they can get
very sick and even die from heatstroke.
• Many chemicals used to grow lawns and plants are poisonous
to pets. Don’t allow your pets near these areas after using
lawn chemicals.
• Ticks and fleas can make your dogs and cats very uncomfortable
and even cause disease. Visit your animal doctor (veterinarian)
to get medicine to get fleas and ticks off your pet.
• Heartworm is a serious disease your dog can get from a mosquito
bite. The veterinarian also had medicine to prevent heartworm.
• Dogs who spend lots of time outdoors need lots of water
and shade.
• Fireworks and firecrackers frighten many dogs and cats.
Keep pets indoors on the Fourth of July.
• Don’t take your dog jogging in the hot summer weather.
Winter
Safety
•
Chemicals used on snow and icy days can hurt your pet’s paws.
Clean their paws off with a wet towel after walks. Remove snow from
between their toes.
• Bring pets indoors when the weather is cold.
• Antifreeze is used in cars. It is very poisonous. It can
kill your dog or cat if they drink it. Ask the adults in your home
to clean up any spills.
• Cats climb up on to the engines of cars to keep warm. Gently
bang on the car hood before entering.
• If your dog or cat lives outdoors, make sure they have a
warm place to sleep. Most dogs and cats like to live indoors with
people.
Christmas
Safety
•
Mistletoe and holly are Christmas plants that are poisonous for
pets.
• Keep candles away from dogs and cats. They may get burned.
They may knock over the candle and start a fire.
• Don’t use tinsel on Christmas trees. Your dog and
cat may try to eat it! Then they will get very sick.
• Place any decorations that can break up near the top of
the tree.
• Christmas costumes may bother your pet. Most pets don’t
like them.
• Chocolate can make your dog very sick. Keep candy away from
your pets.
• Don’t give your pets too much people food during the
holidays. It will upset their stomachs.
• It is not a good idea to give pets as gifts.
