The internet has made it easier than ever to search for pet-friendly housing. Below you’ll find tips to strengthen your search, along with websites and property listings that welcome pets.

Tips for Finding a Pet-Friendly Apartment

• Start early. Give yourself as much time as possible once you know a move is coming.
• Skip listings that say “no pets.” Focus your energy where there’s potential.
• Work with a realtor who is willing to search specifically for pet-friendly options.
• Check multiple sources—local papers, neighborhood listings, and online platforms.
• Look for individual owners (homes, condos, small buildings). They’re often more flexible than large complexes with strict policies.

Put Your Best Paw Forward

Finding housing that allows pets often comes down to preparation and presentation. These steps can make a big difference:

• Write a pet résumé.
  Include your pet’s age; whether they are spayed or neutered; information about personal hygiene; and a behavioral description (training background, character traits). You should also include information about yourself as a pet owner. Be sure to list your veterinarian’s name and phone number, along with other personal references.
• Ask for letters of recommendation.
  A letter from your veterinarian, former landlords, or neighbors can help document that you are a reliable tenant and attentive pet owner.
• Provide training documentation.
  If your dog has attended training classes, class certifications or proof of attendance may be beneficial.
• Share veterinary records.
  Documentation showing that your pet is spayed/neutered, vaccinated against rabies, and up to date on veterinary care can help reassure landlords.
• Offer introductions.

• Be open to financial assurances.
  Offer to pay a reasonable pet-damage deposit or secure liability insurance to cover the cost of any pet-related damage.

• Negotiate a pet addendum.
