Tour formats are determined based on your learning goals, the number of students, their ages, and how much time is available. When you book your tour, these possibilities can be discussed.
Our basic option includes a guided tour through the adoption floor to see all our adoptable animals. Pet care and responsible pet ownership are discussed. This is a great choice for younger children who have no interest in the inner workings of the shelter, but love to see and learn about animals. The tour will take approximately 20-30 minutes.
This tour is the perfect choice for a visiting class or youth group. It includes a short class (see the Single Lesson Offerings for options) in our Education Center, followed by either a Basic or Behind the Scenes Tour. The program can handle up to 30 students and takes approximately 1 – 1½ hours.
Tours may be focused on a specific topic in order to meet your learning goals. Examples of focuses include: green building features, careers with animals, responsible pet care, safety around animals, or the role of an animal shelter. We are happy to work with you on your ideas! Looking to add more fun and excitement to your group’s visit? The group leader may also request an extra experience, such as a scavenger hunt, animal encounter, or service project.
This option is especially designed for groups of more than 30 students. Students are split into small groups and are led by a tour guide to various stations. Stations may include a short lesson, a dog training demo, and a tour of the shelter. A field trip takes approximately 1 – 1½ hours.
