A Conversation-Based Journey to Adoption

Thank you for expressing interest in adopting from the Potter League for Animals. Our mission is to create loving homes and lasting bonds. Whether you’re seeking an active companion or a laid-back friend, we have the perfect match for you! We specialize in connecting people with pets based on shared lifestyles and energy levels, ensuring a strong foundation for every relationship.

At the Potter League, we offer a diverse range of adoptable pets, including cats, dogs, and small animals like rats, rabbits, hamsters, birds, reptiles, and more.

You can view all of our adoptable pets online. We update their availability and location in real time. If you see them, and there is no “on hold” tag they are still available for adoption. There is no appointment needed to visit our pets.

Adoption Process:

Begin the process by viewing our website’s Browse Pets page and finding an animal you’re interested in adopting! We encourage prospective adopters to then fill out our questionnaire describing the kind of companion animal they desire. The resulting pet personality profiles and staff evaluations aid our adoption counselors in finding the right pet for each adopter’s lifestyle. Adoptions are completed in person on a first-come, first-served basis. Once you have found an animal you’re interested in, please visit our Animal Care & Adoption Center located in Middletown, RI during business hours to speak with an adoption counselor. If you wish to put an animal on hold or to adopt an animal from PLFA, you must be present at the PLFA Animal Care & Adoption Center. We will not put animals on an adoption hold via a phone or email request. By clicking the “Adopt” button in a pet’s profile, you can complete our questionnaire, which will help you complete your adoption paperwork more quickly when you visit us in person. Please note: Clicking “Adopt” does not place a “hold” on an animal or guarantee an adoption.

As you consider adopting a new family member, your choice not only enriches your life but also transforms theirs. The adoption fee, which covers the average cost of $500 for caring for our animals, plays a significant role in supporting our mission. By adopting, you ensure they receive vital medical care, nourishing food, and secure shelter. Your contribution provides a profound sense of fulfillment as you bring home a new family member, playing a crucial part in supporting our cause.

Dogs and cats: Spay/neuter surgery and age-appropriate vaccines, microchip, up-to-date flea/tick preventative, ID tag, certificate for veterinarian exam within 14 days of adoption (participating vets only, strongly recommended), any available medical records, small bag of Hill’s Pet Food

Dogs only: 1-month crate rental, discount for basic obedience training class, and a martingale collar.

Cats only: Safety collar, cardboard cat carrier.

What's Next?

If you find an animal you wish to adopt, we’ll sit down for an informal consultation to ensure that you and the pet you’ve selected are a good match. During this process we’ll also review the animal’s medical and behavioral records, explain policies and services available to adopters, and help you choose the right pet supplies.

PLFA will continue to support you and your pet at home. Our website is full of information that can make your pet’s transition from the shelter to your home as stress-free as possible — including tips and details about our programs and services.

Our obligation to our adopted animals does not end when they walk out the door. We want to be an ongoing resource for people and their pets. If you’re looking for answers you can’t find here, our doors are always open.

  • The Potter League provides a free first medical exam at participating veterinary hospitals for new adopters who adopt from the Potter League. The free medical exam is a health examination only. Guardians are responsible for post-adoption expenses related to medications, vaccines, diagnostics or treatments.
  • An appointment for the first free medical exam must be made within 14 days of adoption.

We offer a 10% military (active and veteran) and senior (65+) discount on adoption fees.
