Adopt a Cat Month

June is Adopt a Cat Month, a perfect time to consider welcoming a feline friend into your home. If you’re thinking about adopting a cat, we’d love to introduce you to some wonderful cats here at the Potter League for Animals.
Meet Moon, a 6-year-old with the cutest white face and a little brown goatee. Moon loves treats and naps. Then there’s Allie, a beautiful 9-year-old brown tiger cat who is incredibly cuddly and sweet—the perfect companion for someone who appreciates a gentle, loving feline friend. Odie, an 11-year-old orange tiger cat, is curious and has lived with children and other cats, making him an excellent choice for families.
If you’re looking for a younger cat, come meet Rusty, a beautiful orange and white 7-month-old. Finan, a 3-year-old on the shy side, would thrive in a quiet home. While you’re here, visit Grace, who loves to be petted, especially behind her ears.
Considering adopting more than one cat? Cats are social creatures who benefit from companionship, stimulation, and exercise. Adopting two kittens, for example, allows them to grow up together, keeping each other entertained and engaged.
Here are some important things to consider when adopting a cat:
- Find a Cat Whose Personality Fits Yours: Younger cats tend to be more active and playful, while older cats often prefer quiet downtime. Spend time with different cats to see which one you connect with best.
- Make Sure Everyone Is Ready: Visit the shelter with your whole family to ensure everyone is invested in making the adoption a success. Discuss responsibilities and care requirements beforehand.
- Find a Veterinarian: Schedule a visit with a veterinarian soon after adoption and bring any medical records provided. Establishing this relationship early ensures support for future health concerns.
- Cat-Proof Your Home: Especially important for kittens, cat-proofing involves securing cords, putting away small items, and ensuring no harmful foods or substances are within reach.
- Budget for Your New Cat: Consider costs such as food, veterinary visits, vaccinations, toys, spaying/neutering, and microchipping. Pet insurance can help cover unexpected medical expenses.
- Stock Up on Supplies: Essentials include food and water bowls, litter box and litter, a soft bed, scratching posts, and toys. Our retail area offers many of these items to help you prepare.
- Allow Time to Adjust: Cats may need a few weeks to feel comfortable in a new environment. Start them in one room with their essentials, and gradually introduce them to the rest of your home.
- Introduce Pets Slowly: If you have other pets, introduce them gradually. Consult with our staff or your veterinarian for guidance, and refer to the adoption guide we provide.
- Include Your Cat in Emergency Plans: Update your family’s emergency plan to include your new cat, noting veterinary contacts and microchip information. Keep a carrier and emergency supplies ready.
- Spend Quality Time Together: Building a strong bond involves play, grooming, and simply being present. Let your cat set the pace as they settle into their new home.
