Farewell to Tuki: Our Beloved Feathered Friend

It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of loss that we bid farewell to our beautiful feathered friend, Tuki. For over 15 wonderful years, Tuki graced the Potter League family with his unique charm, vibrant personality, and unwavering spirit. His journey with us began under tragic circumstances, as he came to our shelter as a pet safe pet after his former guardian experienced a devastating house fire, leaving Tuki without a home. With no timeline for repairs, his guardian made the difficult decision to sign him over to our care, and from that moment on, Tuki found his place in our hearts and our lives.
Tuki was no ordinary cockatiel. His spirited personality captivated many, winning over the hearts of some while instilling a respectful fear in others. Tuki was not for the faint of heart; he made you earn his love and affection. He had a special preference for women, despite everyone’s best efforts to win him over. Over the years, a small circle of individuals became his trusted confidants, notably Jill and me, Kara. I had the immense privilege of becoming Tuki’s person, and in return, he became mine. Wrapped around his wing, his life became mine to protect, love, and care for, and I hope I did him justice.
Tuki loved the simple joys of life—gazing out the window, basking in the sun, and feeling the gentle breeze from the window next to his cage. His “apartment” was conveniently situated next to my desk, where he could watch the world go by and participate in all my Zoom calls with a chirp or a whistle. Music was his passion, and he would become visibly excited whenever new birds came into our care. I often imagined he was offering them reassurance, letting them know they were in good hands and that we would care for them until they found loving homes.
For the past 15 years, Tuki has been more than just a shelter mascot; he has been the voice of the Potter League for Animals. His pet advice column, published in the Newport Daily News, covered a wide array of topics, from the care of rabbits and dogs to cats and disaster preparedness. His advice was always timely, insightful, and appreciated by our readers. Tuki also played a vital role in our educational outreach, being a favorite among our younger volunteers. He frequently visited camps and classrooms, helping to educate young minds about animal care with his engaging presence. His sweet song brightened our days and cheered us on during even the most challenging times.
Tuki was never shy about expressing his opinions. He would bark like a dog, hiss at cats, nuzzle your neck, and whistle at you as you walked by. He was a light for all of us, his spirited nature and lively antics bringing joy and laughter to the Potter League.
As I pen these words, please know that Tuki cherished every visitor and friend who came into his life. I am profoundly grateful to all of you for being part of his journey and for the love and care you showed him. Fly high, my beautiful bird. Your memory will forever be etched in our hearts. You were so deeply loved, and you will be sorely missed.
