National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, observed annually in November, is dedicated to recognizing the vital work of animal shelters, their staff, and volunteers. This year, the celebration takes place from November 6 to 12. Animal shelters do more than just find homes for abandoned and surrendered pets; they reunite lost pets with their families, rescue and rehabilitate abused animals, and provide educational programs for schools and communities.
Established in 1996 by the Humane Society of the United States, this week highlights the dedication and hard work of shelter employees and volunteers. According to the ASPCA, approximately 3 million stray and abandoned animals are adopted each year from over 3,500 shelters across the U.S. This tremendous effort wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of shelter staff and volunteers.
How You Can Support Your Local Shelter:
- Visit the Shelter: Touring your local shelter allows you to see firsthand the services and programs offered. Walking through the adoption areas can give you a better idea of what the shelter needs and how you might help.
- Volunteer: Shelters rely heavily on volunteers. While caring for animals is always in demand, there are many other ways to contribute. Administrative tasks, community events, and group activities such as kids’ birthday parties often need support. During the pandemic, volunteers even sewed gowns and masks for staff at the Potter League.
- Adopt a Pet: If you’re ready to add a new furry family member, consider adopting from your local shelter. Shelter staff and volunteers will help match you with the perfect pet. Adoption not only provides a loving home to an animal in need but also frees up space for other animals awaiting homes.
- Foster a Pet: Not ready for a permanent commitment? Fostering can be a great option. It helps pets, especially those who are fearful, adjust in a home environment and provides valuable insights into their behavior to help find their ideal permanent home. Most shelters offer training for foster families.
- Donate: Monetary donations are always appreciated and can often be set up as monthly contributions. No amount is too small. In addition to financial support, shelters often need supplies like food, toys, blankets, and towels. Check your local shelter’s website for a wishlist. Some companies offer charitable gift matching, which can double the impact of your donation.
- Business Support: If you own a business, consider sponsoring shelter events, becoming a regular supporter, or organizing a donation drive at your workplace. These initiatives not only support the shelter but also promote community involvement.
- Spread the Word: Share information about your local shelter’s programs with friends, family, and neighbors. If you’ve adopted a pet from a shelter, sharing your positive experience can inspire others to adopt and support shelter animals.
- Express Gratitude: A simple thank-you card, note, or verbal expression of appreciation can mean a lot to shelter staff and volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to caring for animals.
National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is a time to honor those who work tirelessly to improve the lives of animals. Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word, there are many ways to show your support and make a difference.
