Humane Education Coordinator

Position Description:

Department/Location: Marketing & Community Relations, Animal Care & Adoption Center in Middletown, RI

Classification: Full Time, hourly, non-exempt

Reports To: Director of Marketing & Community Relations

Job Purpose

The Humane Education Coordinator is responsible for all educational programs and information reaching people of all ages concerning the welfare of animals consistent with the mission, philosophy and values of the Potter League for Animals. Develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive education program to engage, nurture a sense of compassion and respect for living beings, and foster humane attitudes toward all life in youth, family, school and community outreach programs. The Humane Education Coordinator is accountable for department goals, working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. They are exemplary educators with the ability to successfully represent the organization to a variety of audiences in the community.Prepares and distributes education and outreach materials designed to further the goals and mission of the organization.

Accountabilities

• Responsible for developing, creating, and evaluating humane education curricula for programs serving all ages, with an emphasis on youth, and maintaining teaching materials and an educational library.
• Responsible for teaching and overseeing youth education programs offered in schools and for after-school activities.
• Plan, prepare, and conduct extensive summer and vacation camp programs.
• Responsible for coordinating youth programs offered at the shelter, including tours, Girl Scout programs, birthday parties, etc.
• Researches, develops, and delivers programs and Pet University sessions to educate the community about animal and environmentally related issues and the activities of the League while assuring that the presentations are in accordance with the Potter League’s philosophy and current animal welfare and sheltering trends.
• Stays current with progressive teaching methodology and advancement and child development. Pursues continuing education related to humane topics and maintains a strong network of professional humane educators.
• Ability to promote and deliver programs & curricula virtually. Avenues may include remote platforms, email, social media, telephone, letter, and in-person meetings.
• Actively seeks out and develops quality partnerships with a wide variety of community organizations and individuals, e.g., service organizations and civic groups, educators, and school administrators.
• Responsible for training, supporting, and supervising volunteer teaching staff and junior camp counselors.
• Oversees programs on the link between animal cruelty, domestic violence, and child abuse.
• Demonstrates initiative and a flexible work schedule, including frequent evenings and weekends,  to meet the job demands while working enthusiastically and cooperatively with all departments and staff to assure that the organization’s goals are met.
• Understands, supports and articulates the organization’s policies and philosophies to the public in a positive and effective manner.
• Promote and emulate exemplary customer service by providing courteous, prompt, and responsive service to internal and external customers.
• Fosters teamwork, creativity, and a work culture aligned with Potter League’s mission and values.
• Administers, manages, tracks, and analyzes the program course evaluation tools.
• Gather testimonials, anecdotes, images, and other materials from program users for use in promotion and fundraising.
• Works with animals of varying size and temperaments, handling individual animals in a caring and respectful manner.
• May be required to work, nights, weekends, holidays, and to support animal care operations during emergency situations
• Adheres to all Code of Conduct standards

• Is proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and has solid general computer skills
• Is able to use remote and distance learning software

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20 per hour with consideration given to skills, abilities, and current salary/tenure with the PLFA
