Join us for the Annual Meeting of the Potter League for Animals on Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Wayfinder Hotel. This event will feature an insightful year-end review and a special presentation by Dr. Nicole Williams, Curator of Collections at The Preservation Society of Newport County.
Dr. Williams, a Yale-educated scholar and curator, brings her expertise in nineteenth-century American art, women’s histories, and the evolution of animal-related cultural practices to this year’s presentation. Her recent work includes curating Wild Imagination: Art and Animals in the Gilded Age, a fascinating exhibition that explores the shifting role of animals in the social, scientific, and political life of Gilded Age Newport.
In her talk, Dr. Williams will discuss the role of animals in Newporters’ lives from the Civil War to World War I, examining how a diverse array of artworks, photographs, and artifacts from the Wild Imagination exhibition illuminate the foundations of our modern relationships with animals. Through these artifacts, she invites us to view animals not only as historical symbols but as sentient agents with stories and experiences all their own.
In addition to Dr. Williams’ talk, the meeting will provide an opportunity to reflect on the Potter League’s accomplishments over the past year and learn more about the work and impact our organization is poised to continue in 2025.
This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP below to help us ensure adequate seating. We look forward to gathering with you at the Wayfinder Hotel on January 30 for an evening of inspiration, community, and shared dedication to animal welfare.
